The Mummy Mountain Residence by Chen + Suchart Studio
The project proposes an architecture that responds to the inherent qualities of the site, privileged views, and the larger context of the Sonoran Desert. The language of the house draws upon these inherencies and allows for a greater understanding of the projects circumstances.
A series of parallel sandblasted concrete block walls (CMU) are configured in a way that allows the landscape and the views to flow freely through the spaces. These CMU walls orient the spaces to the undisturbed views of Pinnacle Peak, the McDowell Mountains, Four Peaks, and the Superstition Mountains, while controlled openings within the CMU walls capture characteristics of the immediate site and landscape, specific views of the mountains beyond, and the desert sky.
A metal clad roof is situated between the CMU walls and inflects to focus specific views based on program. The configuration of Cor-Ten clad metal stud walls aid in editing out the immediate manmade context of the neighboring uninspired houses and assist in focusing views on the landscape and mountains in the distance.
In an effort to domesticate the otherwise raw spaces, the introduction of both veneered plywood and Level 5 plaster walls are articulated as veneers at specific surfaces of the exposed CMU walls at the interior spaces. The millwork is comprised of Quartersawn Maple and white stone countertops.
The garages and entry court are located on the first level. The majority of the projects program is located on the main level at one elevation due to the clients age. Two other bedrooms are located at different elevations, and by means of the section, allow for privacy and a more distinct focus on the specific qualities of views and the desert landscape.

The Leonard Residence by Ehrlich Architects
This 4,000-square-foot residence is situated on a 45-degree-angle downward sloping canyon site in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. Embracing an entry courtyard, the structure is a composition of vast areas in glass supported by steel and concrete, tracing its lineage to the case study houses of LA.
The hillside-bound site presented the most obvious challenge as well as opportunity for design. To achieve the vision objectives, the house is spliced into multiple levels to accommodate and embrace the steep slope yet make the most of all useable space, nearly panoramic views and augment privacy from the closely adjacent homes. Each level fluidly caters to specific living, working and relaxation needs of the residents, allowing for utmost efficiency and comfort.
The entrance level is greeted by a permanently-installed corten steel and glass dining table designed by the Architect. A two-story living room is suspended over the canyon on a structured concrete slab that also serves as the finished floor. From this level, a floating tread stair ascends to the master bedroom/bath suite and a floating reading loft affords classic LA views through the 20-foot high glass walls. Access to a roof terrace above the garage fosters sunbathing and relaxation.
From the main public level, one descends a stair anchored to a cast in place concrete wall to the lower level that houses a home office, guest quarters and storage.

The Temple Hills Residence by Schola Architecture
The design for the Temple Hills Residence is a study in connections. The project is an addition and remodel to an existing 1950s post and beam beach cottage. Taking cues from the eclectic neighborhood the deign captures the essence of the existing cottage, and reinterprets the traditional post and beam into a unique residence. The resulting solution is a house of two faces connected through a thin sheet of glass.
Nestled into a steeply sloping 5,000-square foot site, the volumes step up the hillside to the rear of the existing home creating an ascending series of interior and exterior spaces, giving access to all levels of the property. While the existing home creates the traditional base for the house, the new addition exploits the modular nature of post and beam connections. A monolithic concrete block mass anchors the addition; from which structure and glass pin wheel off creating ever dematerializing living spaces that open up to the views as one moves up through the home.
At the heart of the stainable strategies employed throughout the home is the reuse of the entire existing home. In addition, solar orientation, deep overhangs and operable glass allow the house to breathe throughout the year with little mechanical assistance. The palette is a mix of renewable and exposed building materials, eliminating the need for secondary finishes.
