Villa in Andalucia by McLean Quinlan Architects

The design strategy for this new build villa was to create a building that would exploit the spectacular landscape, while creating an exemplary building for the 21st century.

The site occupies a panoramic south west facing sweep of embankment, with impressive views to the Mediterranean, Rock of Gibraltar and Serrana de Ronda.

The building has seven bedroom suites for the family and their guests in three linked pavilions separated by pools of water, gardens and stone terraces.

Landscaping was key to the concept for this dramatic site and the combination of visual, solar and centrifugal influences inherent in the landscape created a natural orientation for the building as a series of parallel surfaces on a NE/SW axis. These layers defined both shade and space from which to enjoy the Andalucian sunlight, providing tantalising glimpses of the view beyond and shaping tranquil spaces for the inhabitants.

The effect of shadow and water in an Islamic garden was both a practical and metaphoric influence on the design of the whole building helping to temper the immediate microclimate while quietly referencing the historical context.

PostHeaderIcon Unusual Looking Sun Lounger With Storage Basket – Fatback Sunlounger

The Fatback sunlounger is designed by a Japanese designer, Nendo, for this year collection by Tectona. It doesn’t look much like other sun loungers out there thanks to unusual proportions. It is made of woven resin and features a quite spacious storage basket that also serves as a cool back for a pillow. You can put all mattress and pillows there. Besides it features a seat and a footrest elements. That footrest can also act as a small side table. { Tectona }

PostHeaderIcon Still Loving Garden Sheds

About a year ago, I wrote about wanting a shed or some other small structure in the garden.

It must be the time of year because I’ve noticed another round of cute little sheds in my files.

Aren’t they too adorable? I’d love one just to hang out in, to read, listen to music, draw . . . perfect on the weekends, wouldn’t you say? How was yours?

PostHeaderIcon The Sets from the Sitcom “Samantha Who?”

Samantha Who DVD Cover

One of my favorite sitcoms on TV was Samantha Who?, which featured Christina Applegate as a not-so-nice person who gets hit by a car and forgets how bad she used to be. Now she’s “Good Sam” but has to live with the consequences of things “Bad Sam” did. It was a fun premise, and the cast really made the most of it.

I was disappointed when they canceled the show last year and thought it would be fun to take a look back at Sam’s fabulous apartment in Chicago and her parents’ house in the suburbs.

Sam's Apartment-ext

Sam had a high-powered job with a real estate company that paid for a fabulous apartment in Chicago that she shared with boyfriend Todd (Barry Watson).

Sam's apt-hallway

This set was actually Barry Watson’s apartment for two seasons in What About Brian. He had just finished shooting it and it was still standing on the Disney lot, so they used it again for this show. He “freaked out a little” when he walked onto the set and realized it was the same one.

The apartment reminds me of the Chicago digs Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston share in “The Break-Up” (you can see photos of it here).

Sam’s Parents’ House:

Samantha Who-parents' house ext

Sam’s mom and dad (played by Jean Smart and Kevin Dunn) live in the suburbs. As Sam recovers from her head injury, she moves back into her old bedroom for awhile. Their house couldn’t be more different than her city apartment.

Regina's foyer

It’s decorated with a chicken theme because her father is a chicken farmer. In one scene, he says, “Chickens built this house!” Can you count them all?

Dining Room:

One of the co-creators of the show was Cecelia Ahern, the novelist whose P.S. I Love You was turned into a 2007 movie with Hilary Swank.

Samantha’s best friend from work is Andrea (Jennifer Esposito). She keeps hoping that Bad Sam will re-emerge and gives us an idea of what Samantha used to be like before the accident.

Regina’s Blue and Red Kitchen:

I love that Regina’s kitchen still has its old yellow appliances.

Jean Smart and Christina Applegate were both nominated for Emmy Awards for their work on this show.

Samantha’s “nice friend” Dena was played by Melissa McCarthy. (Did you know her cousin is Jenny McCarthy?)

I also loved her as Sookie in Gilmore Girls–you can see my post about that show here.

I’m still sad they canceled this show, but at least we have the two seasons it aired on DVD. Were you a fan?

PostHeaderIcon Four-Story Home In Mountains With Wooden Interior – Ski House

The Ski House is designed by Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates a long time ago for a family with two children where they also could meet with a large number of guests. is on the steep northern slope of the mountain above Vail in a beautiful stand of aspen trees and low evergreen bushes. The building is a four-story house and inspire of tall, straight trees around it features amazing views of surroundings. The first story contains storage, laundry, and sauna facilities. The second contains bedrooms and small bunkrooms to accommodate guests. The third contains the kitchen and dining spaces with a separate room to be used as playroom-TV room for the children and as a guest room. The fourth floor is in the tree tops with big dormer windows containing window seats that can also be used as beds for additional guests. The flooring is wide pine planks; there is cedar siding inside and out and it is furnished mostly with a collection of oak furniture.
